Téia Peters
Téia Peters’ artwork is inspired by the abstract expressionists not only in regard to the use of mixed media, colours, textures and the movement to explore and express thoughts, feelings and emotions, but more importantly, to create a free-formed depiction of a sensation, idea, reaction. The creation of a visual archetype, that expresses what she is experiencing in that unique moment, the result will hold space for others to recognize themselves in her artwork.
Her art is the expression of this quest of discovery and disentanglement of those enmeshed layers created overtime through the relation to others. It makes us think about this permeable thin line that establishes the boundaries – the vessel and its content - of What is me? What is mine? What is yours? What can be free and healthy to exist between those?
Téia believes that art is transformative, in the sense that, in the process of creating through the free expression of feelings, sensations and reactions; the result reflects to us who we are, in our essence, so we can understand it or work on it - be it on an individual level, or collectively. Facilitating this connection is the artist's way to help make this world a better place by create awareness of the importance of self-knowledge to reach inner peace, compassion, and understanding of who we are and why we are here.
“My paintings are very intuitive and the result of an emotional purge. Usually there is no planning ahead, they just come and manifest themselves as a result of the movement and colours that catch my eyes in the moment.
I am a Brazilian born artist and have been living in England for over twenty years working in education and producing art as a way of understanding myself and keeping in touch with my soul. To me, art is the only way of saying the unsayable, especially in a society where you are not encouraged to show your weaknesses, fears and discontents.
During the lockdown, I dedicated myself to studying and practising abstract art, attending online courses delivered by MoMa (Museum of Modern Art, New York): Abstract Expressionism – ‘In the Studio’, ‘The Postwar Abstract Painting’, ‘Modern Art and Ideas’, ‘What is Contemporary Art?’, ‘Seeing Through Photography’ and ‘Fashion as Design’. I also have a ‘Healing with the Arts’ Certificate from the University of Florida.
Since then, I have been exploring my feelings and expressing them through movement and paintings, only now I have finally reached a level of maturity in my work where I am happy to share in a more formal way.”
