After a bad fall on cobblestones in Paris, my arms were x-rayed and I was treated for fractures in both wrists and elbows. I brought the x-rays back to Cambridge where I was renting an art studio space at St. Barnabas Press — a famous print-making studio. I was primarily a painter and sculptor and hadn’t done much print-making at that point but with both arms in casts, I wasn’t able to sculpt for two months so I asked if the St Barnabas Press Master print-maker, James Hill, could help me create a print from the x-rays? He did and duct-taped etching plate tools to the hand-end of my right-hand cast and I was able to draw onto the plates. I created a surrounding soft, healing element, resembling a cast on either side of the photogravure of the actual x-ray of the broken arm. We printed it in black and white and also colour.

My friend Bunny, an eminent art curator who lives in Montreal, Canada, shattered her elbow and had multiple surgeries as a result. She saved her x-rays and offered them to me to be made into art prints. I used spit bit etching to carve into these etching plates by hand as well as relying on Toyobo photogravure to create these prints in black and white and also colour.
