My friend Bunny, an eminent art curator who lives in Montreal, Canada, shattered her elbow and had multiple surgeries as a result. She saved her x-rays and offered them to me to be made into art prints. I used spit bit etching to carve into these etching plates by hand as well as relying on Toyobo photogravure to create these prints in black and white and also colour.

From a distance, the sculpture looks like a green dragon — bristling, with a curved neck as it rests on its haunches. The curve of the neck is that of a striking cobra. It looks dangerous, menacing. But as one draws closer, it is obviously the armature of human life. “Caduceus” represents the human spinal column and pelvis. In the anatomy lab of the University of British Columbia, I studied human bones and made clay models based on the bones which were later cast into lead crystal glass. I decided to include both genders as well as different ages in these ‘portraits of bones’. For example, the sacrum, or tailbone, was my model of the sacrum of a 93- year- old man. I endeavoured to faithfully record the reality of these bones. All the bones came from different people who had donated their remains for study at the anatomy lab. This sculpture honours them. I named it ‘Caduceus’ which is commonly referred to as a medical symbol but the piece actually refers to the famous rod of Asclepius, which was the true medical symbol of healing.
